What is CFOP? A 4-Step Overview for Solving a 3x3

CFOP (Cross – F2L – OLL – PLL) is the most widely used method among speedcubers. It is the foundation for sub-30, sub-20, and faster — if you practice in order and track Ao12, not lucky singles.

How CFOP differs from beginner layer-by-layer

Beginners often solve white cross → white corners → middle edges → yellow face → finish. CFOP still starts with Cross, but F2L pairs a corner and edge together instead of finishing all corners first. OLL/PLL finish the last layer with algorithm sets. On Cube Resolver, the Beginner path is closer to layer-by-layer; the Cross / F2L / OLL / PLL tabs are full CFOP.

1. Cross

Place four edges on the bottom face (usually white), matched to side centers. This is the most important inspection skill — a good face can save seconds and open easier F2L. Common goals: ≤ 8 moves, ideally ≤ 6. See the cross guide and practice on /cross.

2. F2L (First Two Layers)

Pair a corner + edge and insert into each of the four middle slots. F2L dominates solve time. Cube Resolver includes F2L cases with 3D demos, Cross + 1 F2L, and F2L + lookahead drills. When stable, try XCross.

3. OLL (Orientation of Last Layer)

Orient the last-layer stickers to one color. Full OLL has 57 algorithms; many learners start with 2-look OLL. Look up 57 OLL and COLL with 3D demos — you do not need every case at once.

4. PLL (Permutation of Last Layer)

Permute last-layer corners and edges. There are 21 PLLs; 2-look PLL is a common on-ramp. The app covers 21 PLL and ZBLL for advanced study.

A practical practice order

  1. Finish a full cube once on the Beginner path.
  2. Tighten Cross + inspection on WCA scrambles.
  3. Stabilize F2L (fewer pauses) before forcing full OLL.
  4. Learn 2-look OLL/PLL, then expand toward full sets.
  5. Track Ao5 / Ao12 weekly.
